MotionX-GPS from the Thar Desert in India to locating dive sites in Palawan, Philippines

Gunther Deichmann is an internationally multi-awarded Australian photographer (biography), traveling throughout Asia and Micronesia covering remote places in the region. Every year he chooses new destinations to capture images, and he recently starting using MotionX-GPS during his journeys. He enjoyed using it so much that he recommended it to his friend Dirk Fahrenbach, owner and dive instructor at Dugong Dive Center at Club Paradise in Palawan, Philippines.

Dirk says “I am totally amazed how great this software is, the Dugong Dive Center has three big dive boats and I have one GPS for each boat from well-known companies. They are complicated to use in particular for my boat crew. Then I brought my iPhone, Gunther gave me a crash course on the iPhone and installed MotionX-GPS. A few days later during a dive trip, my boat captain and I tried it out on my boat the Toshina, we were both amazed.”

“Easy to use, there is no need for studying any manuals. You can go from page to page and the connection to Google Maps makes it even more enjoyable looking at the current location. Like some music in the background? No problems you even have a page with iTunes! Need a Photo from a waypoint? No problem either, you can find it anytime on your recorded track (with exact time and location at your logbook).”

3,000 miles on a Harley with MotionX-GPS

Chuck Pryor is a MotionX-GPS power user. He logged just over 3,000 MotionX-GPS miles on his Harley during a road trip this summer. Chuck set off from his home just North of Houston, TX, traveled up to Peoria, IL, then down to Hannibal, MO for a family reunion and finally back to Houston. Much of his journey is captured on the Google terrain map below. The most impressive leg stretched 845 miles in a single day, from Perry, MO to Kingwood, TX, in just under 14 hours. While riding, Chuck snapped a photo from his iPhone showing his shadow from the rising sun, and again from the setting sun on the same day.

Following the trip, Chuck told us: “I think it’s a GREAT app… especially for the price. It’s intuitive and easy to use and my friends and family sure enjoyed watching my progress on the trip.”

Chuck is already planning another trip for September that will take him from Houston to Charlotte, NC. Pretty impressive, we’ll look forward to seeing the track!

Yellowstone National Park

The Gunn family recently visited Yellowstone National Park and used MotionX-GPS to mark a few of their interesting stops along the way. They kept in touch with family and friends using MotionX-GPS One-Click sharing to Twitter — posting a link to their marked location and a picture directly to their Twitter feed. Great idea!

Here is a Google Map with their waypoints and pictures:

And here are their Tweets from their Yellowstone adventure:

Just arrived back home, drove back the 930 miles in a single day. Started at 5am, got back around midnight.

Snowmobiling with MotionX-GPS

p1100023s
We had a great time snowmobiling with MotionX-GPS this weekend.  MotionX-GPS tracks speed, distance, time and makes navigation easy with its map and track views.  Creating a waypoint at our starting point made getting back home after dark easy. When we were home, sharing our track with our friends took just one touch with MotionX-GPS. It was a great adventure!

National Geographic Adventure:      25 Best Outdoor iPhone Apps

by Steve Casimiro

Not even a year ago, there were those who questioned the hoopla over the iPhone. And here we are now, secure in the knowledge that Apple’s micro-Mac isn’t just a radical new phone, it’s a revolution in computing, communication, entertainment, and connectivity. If you disagree, well, you probably don’t own one. And that’s not meant to be snotty–I’ve arrived at this conclusion after testing nearly every smartphone available and then stepping up with my own precious cash for the iPhone and monthly unlimited calls and data. It’s a spendy conclusion, but oh-so-worth it.

Another Reason To Buy An iPhone

Need another reason to buy an iPhone? How about because of its GPS capabilities?

I’ve been mulling over whether to buy and iPhone 3g or iPod Touch for surfing and emailing at wifi hotspots while travelling, and one reason that might swing me over to getting the iPhone instead of the Touch is because of its GPS capability. A GPS is only as good as its software and MotionX-GPS has been getting some good reviews.

Here’s a good review by Navigadget.
